The South Shore Regional Hospital Auxiliary raises a huge amount of funds in support of our community’s health. This amazing organization, with three major fundraising arms: The Daisy, a Gift Shop and the Shoreline Gallery, brought in excess of $375,000 in 2018.
The Daisy, situated at 90 Glen Allan Drive, Bridgewater, is open Tuesday to Friday, 11 am-4pm and Saturdays from 10 am -2 pm. Monday is the “staging day” says Jean McHarg, the Daisy’s Convener. “That’s when volunteers set up for the busy week ahead.” The Daisy is always a buzzing! It takes an incredible volunteer effort of 75, mostly retired folks, to sort, steam clean, prep and sell the mountains of clothes and houseware that are donated by the community. “They sell everything from clothes and books, to jewelry, knick-knacks, kitchen utensils, towels and bed linen”, says Jean, who has the added task of scheduling all the volunteers. It takes the selfless commitment of all the Auxiliary’s volunteers to make things work. Incredibly, three volunteers, over age 80, work an impressive 3 days a week and two volunteers, Goldie Hills and Eula Hirtle, have been with The Daisy for over 40 years!
The Gift Shop’s 60 dedicated volunteers hold bake sales and sell a variety of giftware as well as flower arrangements, cards and snacks. The Shoreline Gallery, which is located in the South Shore Regional Hospital’s main corridor, displays reasonably-priced original work of seventy-five local artists, photographers and woodcarvers.
Jean says that “the Daisy and Gift Shop gives volunteers the opportunity to give back to the community.” On the other hand, its inspiring to see how volunteering with the Auxiliary enriches their lives too. Marie Beard, a volunteer says that she blossomed at the Daisy. “We’re like a family.” Auxiliary President, Sharon Ritcey says, “We have so much fun and we support each other and get along so well.” Sharon added that they can always use new volunteers to join their family. All ages are welcome and encouraged! For more information, call 902-543-3099 or drop in the Daisy for an application.
Sharon can’t thank the community enough. “Without their support, we couldn’t do what we do.” So many people come together to make things happen, including Charm Jewellers, who have literally replaced thousands of watch batteries over the years.
Although the community support is outstanding, the Daisy only retains about 60% of what they receive in donations. Sharon encourages people to be as selective as possible, when dropping off items. Some items are just in too much disrepair for them to sell or donate. She also would like people to know that the Daisy is unable to accept household furniture.
Some of the $375,000+ raised by the Auxiliary in 2018 went towards purchasing a portable ultrasound and renovating Bridgewater’s Food Bank. Over the past ten years the Auxiliary has contributed an incredible $2 million towards the purchase of hospital equipment and during the last 4 years it has provided bursaries totalling over $40,000 to hospital volunteers pursuing a career in the health field. It has also given $18,000 in the last 3 years to Bridgewater Senior Wheels, a free bus service to seniors and disabled persons, and continually donates items to other organizations, such as the Diabetes Association, the United Way of Lunenburg County and Souls Harbour Mission. Last Christmas they provided items to the New Germany and Petite Riviere Whimsical Christmas stores.
