The Italy Cross, Middlewood & District Fire Department is celebrating its 55th Anniversary this September. “We have an active group of volunteers who work hard serving our community, and we have fun doing it”, says Chief Ronald Whynot. “I am proud of them all! Together we built a new fire station that was completed in 2013. It took the hard work and dedication of our firefighters, ladies auxiliary and community to raise the 1.7 Million needed to build the facility.” “It’s fully paid for”, he added. “We’re always fundraising. Now, for a new a Tanker Truck.”
Whynot has been serving as Chief for 21 years. “I wouldn’t have hung on this long without the support behind me.” The fire station is going 6-7 days a week with activities, events and rentals. Not to mention that they answer 35-40 calls per year for fires, medical and mutual aid and it serves as a comfort station for hot meals, water, shower, and washing machine in case of power outages due to severe weather.
Together, the department’s approximate 33 volunteer firefighters and 22 auxiliary have a lot going on! A delicious breakfast is served the 1st Saturday of each month from 7-11 am, and they run crib on Tuesdays, a Music Jam on Thursdays and a card party on Fridays. All start at 7 pm. Each June the fire department holds a popular Trout and Bass Fishing Tournament at Wallace Lake. They also host penny auctions, a bottle drive and two fish and chip suppers (Oct. & May). Other suppers usually run the last Wednesday of each month (except July & August). Keep your eye open for details on the upcoming Supper scheduled for Wednesday, September 25, 4-6 p.m.
One of the department’s biggest fundraisers is the Italy Cross, Middlewood & District Fire Department Canteen held annually at the South Shore Exhibition. They’ve been serving up fish and chips, hamburgers and hot dogs etc. for approximately 22 years at the Big Ex. “It’s fun and the volunteers enjoy it!”, says Marguarite Jayne, a member of the auxiliary. The canteen is also open during South Shore in Motion, held at the exhibition grounds in August.
“We’d never survive without our auxiliary”, says the Chief. We work well as a team!” Marguerite says, “If it’s there to be done, we’ll do it!” The auxiliary also caters for weddings, banquets and parties etc. on and off-site.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, new members are always welcome to fight fires, clean the fire station and to help with fundraising activities etc. The hall is available for rental for weddings, parties, baby showers, receptions and more.
