HB Studios Sports Centre, situated in Bridgewater’s Generations Active Park, on Glen Allan Drive, celebrated its 10th anniversary late in 2018. This impressive facility has grown to be a place for – “All Ages, All Abilities, Many Interests!” It’s truly an intergenerational centre for tots, kids, teen, families and adults…. both young and old.
Many people think of HB Studios Sports Centre as an “indoor soccer field”. Soccer has certainly contributed to the success of this facility, but it has become so much more! The multi-purpose rec. centre has an artificial grass field and 60-metre sprint track on the ground floor, in addition to a four-lane 209-metre oval track for walking and running on the 2nd level. It has a fitness area, multi-purpose rooms, washrooms, change rooms and a 2000 sq. ft. studio space, currently occupied by ‘Plan A Dance Centre’.
The staff and volunteer board are committed to the success of HB Studios Sports Centre. They love the place and are proud of it! “It’s the only indoor turf and rubberized track in the South Shore”, says board member Ken Smith. Another member, Lloyd Campbell, says “the Centre holds promise for the future. It’s going to blossom and has all kinds of potential and possibilities.” The Facility’s Manager, Josh Goode, added that in order for the facility to reach its potential they need people to “champion activities and events”.
Janet Clark, one of the beloved employees, has been greeting members and guests, almost since the day it opened. She said “the Centre is a great place for people to catch-up and socialize.” “My walkers…my buddies solve the problems of the world.” Janet initially used the indoor track after she fell on icy sidewalks a couple of time and tries to walk 6 km each day. The centre “is a big deal” to her. She also says that it’s a great place for people with Parkinson’s, heart disease, arthritis and other health ailments to walk”.
What can you do at this awesome facility? Walking and running are two of the most popular activities at HB and the cost is very reasonable! There’s no wind, rain, snow, freezing temperatures or blazing heat to deal with. It’s literally a controlled climate, making it a perfect, safe place to get your walk or run in. Being indoors, you also get the advantage of having restroom facilities near-by. Paul Fynes a regular walker said, “I can’t imagine what we would do without it!” I can’t walk outside in the winter, so it’s wonderful to have a place like this.” Parents, grandparents and childcare providers are encouraged to bring along their little ones for a walk. Stollers are welcome!
To help get you inspired, HB has an upcoming walking event in March; a “Walk Canada Challenge”, where walkers will track their steps (some pedometers provided), record them with staff and see how fast they and the group can walk, across Canada.
The upstairs track, like the rest of the building, is accessible by elevator as well as stairs and has plenty of seating if you need a break. The Centre even has a tricycle, for two riders, who sit side-by-side, making cycling and activity accessible to all. Only one able-bodied rider is required, leaving one seat for people with balance, strength, vision, or motor skill challenges. The pedals operate independently, so when you’re not pedaling, they don’t turn, and riders can take a rest.
The Sport Centre is, in-deed, a fantastic venue for recreational and competitive soccer for all ages. There’s an opportunity for almost everyone who wants to play. Nick Brown, a board member plays men’s soccer at the facility. He says that, “its an affordable way to stay in shape and socialize and connect with others.” This venue offers even more! There’s Judo and dance, weekly radio-controlled plane flying and fly fishing. Moms, dads, grandparents and groups love the FREE drop-in pre-school activity program that takes place most Tuesday and Thursdays, from 10 am -12 noon, October-April. Pre-schoolers can run, jump and play with all sorts of “cool stuff”.
The Centre has become a big birthday party destination, for all ages. Active EVENTure, rents out laser-tag and bubble soccer equipment for parties and team-building events and has more options coming soon! The venue has equipment and supplies for shuffleboard and boccie, in addition to two golf driving ranges and batting cage. The meeting room is also well suited for ukulele classes, cards and socials and the larger multi-purpose space, even has dart boards.
“Exciting news!” HB is working with ‘Flourish’ to bring a seniors centre to the location. If all come together, it will start in the Spring! Keep your ears open for upcoming details!
There’s something on-the-go at HB Studios Sports Centre all the time. In early May, the Centre will host the Milk Sport Fair, an interactive sport & recreation exhibit, put on by Sport Nova Scotia for kids in grades 3-8. The field is also a spring training location for baseball and football, and a place for local, provincial and national rugby teams to play.
HB Studios Sports Centre, currently in its Winter hours, is open Monday-Friday 8am-9pm, Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 9am-9pm.
